When discussing antiques, regardless of their antiquity, the most important things to note are how well they have been kept and their restoration.

A costly piece of furniture can very easily lose its value and authenticity, if it has been upholstered without intimate knowledge of each particular piece and it's history. A few points to consider:

  • Firstly its origin
  • Secondly the era in which it originated
  • Thirdly the technique and materials used in the padding,
  • And fourthly the style applied giving it the appropriate finish.

Mario devotes a lot of time and care when it comes to stripping the furniture back to its frame. He then analyses every layer of the padding and every angle of the frame. Armed with this knowledge and his extensive experience, he then makes sure that the frame is properly restored and french-polished according to the original state of upholstering that the piece was made in its original glory.

The same care and personal attention is also undertaken when modern furniture is to be restored. Mario takes special interest in every detail, particularly when it comes to the conformability of each piece, even to the point of reinforcing the back or seat in order to correct any weakness due to poor manufacture.

The Process of Restoring Old Furniture

In most cases, the padding, webbing and perhaps frame, have given way, to the extent that it no longer gives comfort and support. Generally, most of the materials inside have to be replaced. Occasionaly, the frame may have been damaged and requires repairs or french-polishing. Exclusive Furniture Creation will always advise our clients prior to commencing any work. As furniture Artisans we will always analyse all the piecs, it's details and whether it is an antique or a modern piece and then the process will begin.

In the first insatnce, extreme care is taken when stripping the piece back to its frame, so as not to damage the wood. Then the upholstering starts; webbing is replaced and attached to the frame. Coils or springs are sewn into place, one by one. The thumb or roll is sewn by hand, this creates and shapes the edges. Layers of horsehair, coir-fibre, sackcloth and wadding, are sewn with large needles, thereby remodelling the style of the furniture piece to its original state. Finally, a layer of calico is sewn, before the artisan finishes the piece with the final chosen fabric.

For modern furniture pieces, the padding inside is made differently, however we only use the highest quality materials on the market and the upholstery is completed with a lot of care by the hands of a craftsmen, reinforcing and strengthening the back and seat on each piece in order to achieve comfort, bringing each piece back to its original glory.
